A furniture piece can look perfectly sized on a website and still feel completely wrong once it arrives.
The most common mistake is checking whether the furniture fits the room, but not whether it fits the way the room is actually used.
Here is what to measure before placing an online furniture order.
1. Start With the Product Dimensions
Check all three measurements:
• Width (W): side to side
• Depth (D): front to back
• Height (H): floor to highest point
Do not judge size from product photos. Wide-angle photography can make furniture appear smaller or larger than it really is.
2. Mark the Size on Your Floor
Use masking tape or newspaper to create the exact furniture footprint.
For example, if a console is 150 × 40 cm, mark that exact rectangle on the floor. Then walk around it.
Does it block a doorway? Make the passage narrow? Interfere with another piece of furniture? This simple test is often more useful than looking at dimensions on a screen.
3. Measure the Space Furniture Needs in Use
Furniture does not remain static.
A dining chair needs room to pull back. A drawer needs space to open. A recliner needs clearance behind it. A bed needs walking space around the sides.
Measure the furniture in its used position, not only its closed position.
4. Check Proportion, Not Just Fit
A 240 cm sofa may technically fit against a 300 cm wall, but that does not mean it will look balanced.
Also consider:
• nearby furniture
• ceiling height
• rug size
• windows
• side tables
• walking space
“Fits” and “looks right” are different questions.
5. Measure the Delivery Route
Before ordering a large piece, check:
• main entrance
• door width and height
• lift opening
• lift interior
• staircase width
• corridor turns
• final room door
A piece that fits the room is useless if it cannot reach the room.
6. Check the Details People Often Miss
Before clicking “Order,” look for:
• seat height for chairs and sofas
• seat depth for comfort
• arm height near tables
• table height with existing chairs
• drawer opening space
• bed size vs mattress size
• skirting and wall projections
These smaller dimensions often determine whether furniture feels comfortable in daily use.

Before ordering:
1. Note the exact W × D × H.
2. Tape the footprint on the floor.
3. Test walking space around it.
4. Check doors, drawers and chair movement.
5. Measure the complete delivery route.
